If you don’t know already, The Smashing Pumpkins are my favorite band…
And I wrote a review for their new single a few weeks ago, and I have to admit the song really does grow on you.
Like anything new from a band you love – you have to give it time. It’s now one of my favorite SP songs.
Loving the song so much, inspired me to look at the music video.
And I thought I should just analyze what I think it means.
However, I’m still trying to figure out what the heck is going on. It’s a very odd and confusing video.
The start of it, shows Billy Corgan trapped in a room with a silver skirt and black shirt. Notice the skirt. Back in the days when the Pumpkins were top of the trends list, he wore shiny silver pants and a black shirt that said “Zero”. Representing the Mellon Collie era. But now, instead of the word Zero – it’s a object around his neck with the number 0 hanging down.
I think that him being trapped in a room wearing that represents that he feels he’s stuck in the past, as if it were a closed jailed room – and he feels that people just see him as the guy who wrote “Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness”.
Moving on, a few nurses come in to give him an IV of some sort. Than you see James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin at a fountain, spitting up blood.
That part really makes no sense, and I can’t seem to figure it out. I’d imagine it’s just a filler, trying to keep the video moving without any awkward transitions.
Anyways, after all of this – Billy and the band are locked in a room with three blondes.
I think those three blondes represent the three women of his past people always associate him with. And those people are former bassist Darcy Wretzky, ex-girlfriend Courtney Love, & ex-wife Chris Fabian.
You see these three women holding him down, so he can’t move forward. As in, he feels they are holding him down so he can’t break free of the past. As the line says “I am trying” – meaning I’m trying to move on but I’m “nothing but a body in my mind”. Which means, the people of his past are one of the contributing factors to why he can’t move forward, and that they keep appearing in his life.
Next you see Jimmy and James playing chess, while Billy is being held down – which I guess just really means that even though he’s suffering – they can’t figure it out.
Billy then broke free of these women, and now is in a room with a girl in a nursing bed. That girl is actually his real life girlfriend. Beside her, are two mimes. One to the left, anther to the right. They’re holding machine guns, and Billy has an unsettling terrified look on his face.
Billy has had a kid with this girl, and I feel that the room he walked into was anther room of the past. The mimes represent nurses that won’t leave him alone, and keeping flushing him out with past memories. The machine guns represent facts they know about him, and they seem to want to shoot him down with these facts.
Billy is now seen running outside, with a whole lot of actors that are looking at him strangely. The looks of surprise. As in “he’s so much different than he was then, his music has changed, and why is he less than we expected”. Despite all of these people chaining him down, he finds peace. He looks at a kid, who is his real son in real life & then the video ends.
Thanks for reading. I was still figuring things out as I was writing this, so I apologize for any errors. But, this is what I think the video means and resembles. For the most part at least.
