Top 5 Best MTV Unplugged Performances

Top 5 Best mtv Unplugged Performances

“MTV as you may know was huge, and they were very well known for music videos in the 80’s and 90’s. Before they turned to reality television in the 00’s, they had a short-lived series called “MTV Unplugged”, on which they would invite a musical artist to play a acoustic set live and recorded on MTV. And I was talking to one of my friends about what he thought was the best MTV Unplugged Performance was and I got a great idea, because he had given me many answers I decided to blog about what my top 5 favorite performances were. Enjoy!”

5. Bob Marley & The Wailers

“This was one of the first bands on the series, and they did an absolutely amazing job. The performance was widely recognized as one of Bob’s last great performances, and in my opinion this was my favorite ever performance by him. The band put so much passion into their short set. A surprising amount of passion, usually artists don’t put that much into short acoustic performances, but these guys really did. And they wowed the heck out of me.”

4. Pearl Jam

“Pearl Jam is one of my favorite bands of all time, and MTV Unplugged was well known in the 90’s for putting grunge bands in the series. Pearl Jam’s performance really stood out, because of Eddie Vedder. With Eddie every performance is completely different, and in this performance it was wildly seen as one of Vedder’s greatest moments, as the critics called it “Vedder at his best with vocal ability”. This performance was more different than his others, and literally stood out more than any other show he had done before.”

3. Stone Temple Pilots

“As I said before, most of the bands that went on the series were grunge bands. And not many did better than Stone Temple Pilots. They made the best out of the performance and only played their biggest songs, their performance was rightfully dubbed “Iconic, and started the movement of making MTV’s Unplugged bit great”. With Scott Weiland having so much vocal range, and Eric, Dean, and Robert, baring so much musical talent and hard work – Stone Temple Pilots easily are recognized as not only one of the best performances on MTV, but of the 90’s in general.”

2. Alice In Chains

“This whole performance was the most unique performance by this band that I had ever seen before. The Setlist they choose was amazing and Layne Staley’s voice took me on a emotional roller coaster. The band was seen with more passion than ever, and the performance rise to fall was awesome. I found myself finding some of the versions better than they were in the studio, and couldn’t listen to the song unless it was in this performance.”

1. Nirvana

“Nirvana is and will always be the greatest mtv Unplugged Performance. It was Kurt’s very last big show, and I’ve watched this performance over and over again. Their amazing version of “The Man Who Sold The World”, left me forever in awe, and the less-guarded Version Of “On A Plain”, left me saying that this is definitely the greatest MTV Unplugged Performance. From them bringing in the cello player, to the meat puppets, and Kurt’s incredible vocal change – it all just was amazing. I wish it never had ended.”

“Thank-you guys for reading! Post commentary and tell me who you think did the best job on MTV Unplugged.” -Luke Giese
