My Interview With The Hoy Polloy

I sat through an interview with The Hoy Polloy and had a great time. They’re an awesome rock band with aspirations of becoming even bigger than they are now, and I don’t doubt they will. I learned a lot from them. I jotted down about 8 questions for them, and they as a band responded. For a few questions you’ll notice that each individual member got their own say in it. Enjoy reading!” -Luke Giese

QUESTION #1:”WHAT INSPIRED THE NAME OF THE BAND?” -Luke Giese

“Hoy Polloy is a Greek phrase which is translated to “The Masses”. Originally spelled “Hoi Polloi.” We really wanted to speak to the masses of course, and that’s really why we picked the name.” ~The Hoy Polloy

QUESTION #2:”WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A MUSICIAN?” -Luke Giese

“I get to play (Drums)! Drums is the most fun instrument there is. It’s really like a workout. Because I’m moving my limbs, arms, and all that. It’s like cardio for music.” ~Alex Blue (Drums)

“The fact that I can play whatever I want for like 45 minutes. I love playing, and it’s especially fun when I get to do what I love while playing material I love.” ~The Raven (Guitar)

“The view from the stage. You’re looking down at a lot of people and it makes you feel good.” ~Ferret (Keyboards)

QUESTION #2:”WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL INFLUENCES?”-Luke Giese

“That’s a really tough one. I’d have to give honor to Led Zeppelin. They inspired me to play music, and I wouldn’t even be playing without them. Their music’s awesome. And other one of my favorites is Mars Volton. And you had to see this coming because I’m a drummer.” ~Alex Blue (Drums)

“Tool. I’m certain every electric guitarist loves Tool. Anther one I love is the Velvet Underground, I adore these guys. Definitely without doubts my all-time favorites.” ~The Raven (Guitar)

“Elton John, and since Alex took Zeppelin I guess Jack White. I mean I play keys so you’d think I say Yes or something like that. But I mean only picking our two favorites is pretty hard.” ~Ferret (Keyboards)

QUESTION #3:”WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE GENRE OF YOUR MUSIC, WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO CLASSIFY YOUR GENRE AS?” -Luke Giese

“I mean all of us really hate labels. Genres suck. Their great for the people selling the music, not so much for the people making it. But I guess overall we like to call ourselves a new thing called alternative-Indie-progressive. A mix of alternative Rock, Indie, & progressive rock.” ~The Hoy Polloy

QUESTION #4:”WHAT DO YOU THINK THE BEST DECADE FOR MUSIC IS?” -Luke Giese

“Oh God that’s Tough. Although my favorite is Led Zeppelin, I’d have to say that my overall taste in music is in the 90’s. 1990’s. The best hip-hop was there.” ~Alex Blue (Drums)

“90’s without hesitation.” ~Ferret (Keyboards)

“DUH, the 90’s man! Did you hear my favorite musical influences?!” ~The Raven (Guitar)

“70’s man. I’m a bass player and a saxophonist, you had to get that. I know assuming my favorite decade is the 70’s just based on that is presumptuous but in this case you’d be right if you guessed.” ~K Sos (Bass-guitar, Lead Singer, Saxophonist)

QUESTION #5:”WHO WRITES THE MAJORITY OF THE BAND’S MUSIC?” -Luke Giese

“We all put in a little bit of work, and our line-up has changed quite a bit. This is the current line-up and everybody put in a little bit of work into the latest record, aside from Alex. But overall me & Sos do most of the writing in the band.” ~Ferret (Keyboards)

QUESTION #6:”DO YOU GUYS CONSIDER YOURSELVES MORE OF A COVER BAND OR AN ORIGINAL BAND?” -Luke Giese

“Original all day every day, we don’t like playing covers. Mainly because you can mess those up easier, and with originals your selling your music out there to the world and you can’t mess it up because it’s yours. And we only do covers that we think we wrote first.” ~Alex Blue (Drums)

QUESTION #7:”WHAT MATERIAL DO YOU ENJOY TO PLAY MORE? COVER SONGS OR ORIGINAL SONGS?”-Luke Giese

“We play a lot more originals and have a lot more fun doing so.” ~The Hoy Polloy

QUESTION #8:”WHO IS YOUR PRODUCER?” -Luke Giese

“Your looking at him. I wear a lot of hats in this band. From playing saxophone, to bass-guitar, to being the lead singer, primary songwriter, & producer. Like Kurt Cobain.” ~K Sos (Bass-guitar, Lead singer, Saxophonist)

QUESTION #9:”WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SONG IN THE HOY POLLOY CATALOG” -Luke Giese

“Although I don’t even write any of the songs, I really like “This World”. It’s very relatable to me and that’s why I love it. It’s fun to play and it’s really meaningful. Like how songs should be.” ~Alex Blue (Drums)

“Houdini, it’s one of our first songs ever to be put out. We hardly ever play it and that’s probably why I love it so much. You can’t get bored of something if you don’t play it often.” ~Ferret (Keyboards)

“Sometime. I’m a guitarist man, and in sometime I basically just get to shred the whole f*cking Song. It’s like Neil Young’s “Keep On Rockin In The Free World”. Just basically messing around on the fretboard, Without a care in the world. To the point where you can’t even put it out on sheet music.” ~The Raven (Guitar)

“Happy again. I wrote it in a very hard time for me, and I f*cking love playing it. It brings back memories to me and as a songwriter I love that.” ~K Sos (Bass-guitar, Lead singer, Saxophonist)

“There you have it. I hope you learned about the band and go check them out! They’re on iTunes and Spotify, and their latest album “Bye, Bye Bogota”, is released. So go download it and start following these guys on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and whatever!” -Luke Giese
